Jesse Stone is een voormalig rechercheur moordzaken uit LA, die de grote stad heeft ingeruild voor een baantje als politiecommandant in het rustig vissersdorpje Paradise, New England. Stone heeft zijn oude gewoontes niet achtergelaten en doet zich nog steeds te goed aan zijn twee favoriete dingen: Scotch whisky en vrouwen. Als Jesse een oude moordzaak heropent, ontdekt hij het ene schokkende feit na het andere en begrijpt steeds beter waarom deze zaak in de doofpot werd gestopt…
