Dirk Pitt wordt op een onmogelijke missie gestuurd naar Afrika. Hij verzeilt in een ingenieus maar gruwelijk complot van een meedogenloze Franse industrieel en een West-Afrikaanse dictator. Een epidemie en een gifschandaal vormen een directe bedreiging voor al het leven op aarde. Pitt wordt gevangen genomen door een vijandige stam, ontsnapt op een sensationele manier en staat te voet en met een minimum rantsoen aan water aan de rand van de Sahara. En er is geen weg terug.
