Steve Everett, een ex-alcoholistische, vrouwen versierende reporter krijgt een verhaal onder ogen over een gevangene die om middernacht ter dood gebracht zal worden voor de moord op een zwangere vrouw. Steve ziet meteen dat een getuige gelogen heeft over wat hij heeft gezien, en denkt dat de gevangene onschuldig is.
