Sam Baldwin denkt sinds de dood van zijn echtgenote niet meer aan vrouwen. Zijn achtjarige zoontje Jonah vindt echter dat het gezin dringend een moeder nodig heeft en belt naar een live radioprogramma, waarin Sam gedwongen wordt zijn gevoelens over de telefoon te uiten. Vanuit het hele land komen reacties van vrouwen die Sam wel zien zitten. Annie Reed is een van hen. Hoewel ze al verloofd is, móét ze te weten komen of Sam misschien de ideale Jacob is.
