Martin Riggs komt eindelijk de vrouw van zijn leven tegen; de mooie en ruige Lorna Cole, die ook bij de politie zit. Samen met haar en zijn trouwe partner Murtaugh gaan ze op zoek naar een corrupte politieman die met een wapensmokkel bezig is. Als Murtaugh’s familie dan ook nog wordt bedreigd wordt het pas echt serieus.
