Ira Wells is een detective op leeftijd, die bijna met pensioen gaat. Maar voor het zover is krijgt hij te maken met twee nieuwe zaken: de ene betreft de moord op zijn voormalige partner en de ander een hippie die hoopt dat Wells haar verdwenen kat kan terugvinden. Hij ontdekt al snel dat de zaken misschien wat met elkaar te maken hebben en het spoor leidt naar een grote misdaadbaas in Hollywood.
