Alec Bailey is een gokker en rokkenjager die getraumatiseerd is door de dood van zijn tweelingbroer Charlie. Hij zit krap bij kas, maar krijgt een aanbieding van zijn oom Richard die in het Canadese Halifax woont. Hij wil Alecs schulden aflossen op één voorwaarde: Alec moet een jaar in Halifax verblijven. Hij aanvaardt het voorstel, maar wanneer hij in de stad aankomt, ontdekt hij dat de bewoners geloven dat hij 'De Uitverkorene' is, een man met de kracht om alle ziektes te genezen.
