Oorlogsrobot Nummer 5 wordt geraakt door de bliksem, ontsnapt en denkt dat hij leeft. Nr. 5 gaat op zoek naar input, en ontmoet Stephanie Speck (Ally Sheedy) die hem/haar/het veel leert over Het Leven. De militairen willen het robotje vernietigen. De uitvinder Newton Crosby (Steve Guttenberg) die samen met Stephanie, Nummer 5 beschermt wordt verliefd op haar.
