Als hij de diagnose terminale kanker krijgt, wordt Max na twaalf jaar vrijgelaten uit de gevangenis. Hij heeft nog maar één wens: zich verzoenen met zijn dochter Maxine en zijn kleinzoon die hij nog nooit heeft ontmoet. Alleenstaande moeder Maxine stemt er – vooral om financiële redenen - mee in dat haar vader bij hen komt wonen. Max probeert wanhopig om het beeld dat zijn dochter van hem heeft te veranderen, maar dan duikt Maxine’s gewelddadige, drugsverslaafde ex-man op waardoor ze allemaal moeten vechten tegen Max’ duistere verleden.
