John Jasper is een humeurige koormeester op een school in Engeland, tijdens het Victoriaanse tijdperk. Hij leidt een dubbelleven als opiumverslaafde. Jasper raakt geobsedeerd door de beeldschone Rosa, een jonge studente die verloofd is met Edwin Drood. Ze voelt dat er iets niet in de haak is met Jasper en is daarom doodsbang voor hem. Haar angst blijkt gegrond te zijn.
