Privédetective Philip Marlowe helpt vriend Terry Lennox naar Mexico, om de volgende dag gearresteerd te worden als verdachte in de moord op de vrouw van zijn vriend. Marlowe wordt vrijgelaten wanneer blijkt dat Lennox zelfmoord heeft gepleegd en een bekentenis heeft afgelegd in een zelfmoordbrief.
