Mevrouw Elizabeth Bright Murdock huurt Marlowe in om een oude zeldzame munt te vinden, de Brasher Doubloon, die thuishoorde in de collectie van haar overleden echtgenoot. Marlowe begint een onderzoek, maar raakt al snel verstrikt in een reeks onverklaarbare moorden.
