Sante Chambers' kindertijd is er één vol misbruik en armoede. Zij wordt al vlug gedwongen te liegen, te bedriegen en te stelen om in leven te blijven. Voor haar twee zonen Kent en Kenny wil ze een beter leven opbouwen. De rijke aannemer Ken Kimes past goed in haar plannen en ze weet hem zover te krijgen dat hij met haar trouwt. Ondanks haar nieuwe rijkdom slaagt Sante er niet in haar kleptomane en manipulatieve eigenschappen te overwinnen. Haar oudste zoon doorziet haar als hij ouder wordt en hij vlucht in het leger. Sante stort zich dan maar op Kenny om hem al haar truken te leren.
