CIA agent Cross (Burt Lancaster) wil van zijn pensioen gaan genieten, maar zijn baas vindt dat hij inmiddels te veel weet en dus dient te worden vermoord. Een klusje voor CIA agent 'Scorpio' (Alain Delon) die het vak net van Cross heeft geleerd en pas na laffe chantage bereid is tot de moord op zijn meester.
