Wanneer de hard werkende tv-producer Becky Fuller (Rachel McAdams) ontslagen wordt bij een regionaal nieuwsprogramma, klopt ze aan bij 'Daybreak', het nationale nieuwsprogramma. Becky wil daar gaan samenwerken met de legendarische nieuwslezer Mike Pomeroy (Harrison Ford), maar die weigert zich te mengen in de weerberichten, de roddels en mode-nieuwtjes. Wanneer er heftige confrontaties ontstaan tussen de twee, komt haar opbloeiende liefde met medeproducent Adam Bennet (Patrick Wilson) bijna aan het licht. Becky komt hierdoor steeds dieper in een moeilijke situatie terecht en zowel haar reputatie, haar relatie met Adam, als haar baan komen hierdoor op de tocht te staan...
