De ietwat oudere dokter Leonard Gillespie heeft een nieuwe assistent, de Nederlandse vluchteling en chirurg Dr. John Hunter Gerniede. Beiden behandelen de schizofrene en moordzuchtige maniak Roy Todwell, die bij het minste klaar staat om toe te slaan.
