1935, Connecticut. De tweeling Niles en Holland verloren hun vader aan een ongeluk in de schuur achter hun grote huis op het platteland. Hun moeder is sindsdien gebroken door verdriet en hun Russische grootmoeder houdt vooral een oogje op Niles, die de zachtaardige van de tweeling is. Niles maakt zich zorgen om Hollands opstandige gedrag, maar toch blijven ze veel met elkaar optrekken.
