Luik, de jaren 30. De vijftiger Albert neemt beroepshalve de zorg over de twaalfjarige Mia op zich. Voornamelijk haar gebit vergt meerdere keren per dag extra aandacht. De twee leven alleen in een groot appartement waar Mia zich 24 uur per dag ophoudt en waar de rolluiken steeds neergelaten zijn. Elk dag is hetzelfde, net als de wekelijkse telefoontjes van een man die naar de gezondheid van het meisje vraagt. Maar op een dag krijgt Albert het verzoek om het meisje naar Parijs te brengen.
