1947. De gepensioneerde Sherlock Holmes woont in een afgelegen boerderij in Sussex met zijn huishoudster en haar zoon. Holmes zorgt voor zijn bijen, houdt een dagboek bij en wordt geconfronteerd met de afnemende krachten van zijn brein. Toch denkt hij veel aan een vijftig jaar oude, onopgeloste zaak.
