Kirk, inmiddels admiraal, krijgt nog één keer het commando over zijn oude schip om een vreemde en dodelijke macht tegen te houden die op weg is naar de aarde. Kirk zoekt zijn oude bemanningsleden bij elkaar om met hen de planeet te redden.
