Rachel Carlson (Demi Moore) is een succesvol schrijfster van thrillers. Aan haar geluk komt abrupt een eind als haar zoontje van vijf verdrinkt en haar huwelijk op de klippen loopt. Ze raakt behoorlijk in de war. Wanneer zij via een vriend een huisje huurt in een afgelegen dorpje in Schotland, hoopt zij in alle vrede haar rouwproces te kunnen verwerken. Ze ontmoet de vuurtorenwachter, Angus McCulloch, met wie ze romantische momenten beleeft. In het dorp vertelt ze over haar ontmoeting. De dorpelingen vertellen haar dat McCulloch echter jaren geleden overleed, nadat hij in een vlaag van woede zijn vrouw en haar minnaar vermoordde...
