De racistische Hank Grotowski woont samen met zijn vader Buck en zijn zoon Sonny, met wie hij tevens in de gevangenis werkt waar de ter dood veroordeelde Lawrence Musgrove op zijn executie wacht. Wanneer door toevalligheden de paden van Hank en de alleenstaande zwarte moeder Leticia elkaar kruisen, hebben zij meer overeenkomsten dan zij op het eerste gezicht doorhebben.
