David Dunn raakt betrokken in een groot treinongeluk. Niemand van de inzittenden overleeft het ongeluk, behalve David die geen schrammetje heeft. Hij komt na het ongeluk in contact met Elijah Price, een verzamelaar van comics die z'n hele leven al geplaagd wordt door een slechte gezondheid en snel brekende botten.
