Politiedetective Mike Seaver (Scheider) is een seriemoordenaar op het spoor. Hij krijgt echter niet veel steun van de rest van het politiebureau en ook niet van de FBI. Seaver staat er dus alleen voor. Hij ontdekt een vreemde connectie tussen de slachtoffers en honkbalwedstrijden. Dan wordt het een race tegen de klok, want het is bekend dat er een slachtoffer zal vallen, maar waar?
