De jaren 30. Rusty Russell, een toegewijd football-coach van een schoolteam, kent een mysterieus verleden. Hij loodst het team 'The Mighty Mites' naar de staatskampioenschappen. Naast het feit dat hij dit team naar de kampioenschappen coacht, slaagt hij er ook in een inspiratiebron te zijn voor een land dat compleet in duigen ligt.
