Hij is pas 26, toch staat Joseph Bonanno al aan de top van één van de meest gevreesde maffiafamilies in Amerika. Zijn grote voorbeeld is de allerhoogste baas der bazen Lucky Luciano. Als belangrijkste steunpilaar van President Franklin D. Roosevelt, vliegt zijn ster als een komeet omhoog. Maar ondertussen dreigt vanuit Europa de Tweede Wereldoorlog en bindt de burgemeester van New York de strijd aan met Siciliaanse maffia in zijn stad. In ruil voor antifascistische aanslagen in Italië, kan Bonanno enkele van zijn maffioze vrienden uit de gevangenis houden.
