La Pampa, Argentinië. María, een lerares in een klein stadje die op het punt staat moeder te worden, besluit haar gewelddadige echtgenoot te verlaten om haar kind op een betere plek op te voeden. Een klein incident luidt het begin in van haar reis door de vijandige woestijn.
