Deborah Bergman (Patty Duke) is een New Yorkse fotografe en alleenstaande moeder van de 11-jarige Jenny (Danielle Brisebois). Ze ontmoet de charmante Theo Marker (David Birney) die eigenaar is van een wolfshond, welke ze graag wil gebruiken voor een fotoshoot. Deborah brengt graag tijd met Theo door, maar wijst zijn romantische avances telkens af, omdat ze graag onafhankelijk is. Ook Jenny vindt Theo aardig, totdat ze ziet dat haar moeder aan het veranderen is.
