Boekhandelaar A.J. Fikry voelt zich verloren sinds de dood van zijn vrouw. Hij kampt met financiële problemen en drinkt te veel. Tot overmaat van ramp wordt ook zijn meest kostbare bezit, een verzameling gedichten van Edgar Allen Poe, gestolen. Maar wanneer hij op een dag een achtergelaten baby aantreft in zijn boekwinkel, neemt zijn leven een compleet andere wending.
