Twee koppels, buren van elkaar, vechten tegen het isolement en de ontberingen van hun omgeving aan de grens van de Amerikaanse oostkust in de negentiende eeuw. Zowel hun fysieke als mentale gezondheid wordt sterk op de proef gesteld. De hechte band die tussen de dames is ontstaan, staat op springen wanneer de vier individuen uiteindelijk ook met elkaar worstelen.
