De eenvoudige Joseph Briteman is een misvormde patiënt in een instituut. Hij dwaalt af naar een geanimeerde wereld van fantasie en werkelijkheid op zoek naar zijn lang verloren zus. Zijn zoektocht leidt hem naar een ontmoeting met een goedhartige filmster die hem zonder het te weten in haar unieke fantasiewereld brengt. Uiteindelijk is het een bijna-doodervaring die Jozef uiteindelijk dwingt de waarheid te accepteren met betrekking tot de verdwijning van zijn zuster.
