Journalist Tom werkt in Washington D.C. en besluit met kerst zijn vriendin in Los Angeles te bezoeken. Als eerbetoon aan zijn overleden vader maakt hij de lange reis per trein. Tom wil er een goed verhaal over schrijven en luistert vol interesse naar de verhalen van zijn medepassagiers. Hij is stomverbaasd als hij aan boord van de trein zijn oude vlam Eleanor tegenkomt.
