Het levensverhaal van Howard Marks (Rhys Ifans), een Britse drugssmokkelaar in de jaren '80. Zijn creatieve manieren om drugs te smokkelen, zijn hoge intelligentie en de gave die hij heeft om deze eigenschappen optimaal te combineren zorgen ervoor dat hij op basis van loyaliteit een geweldloos smokkelimperium over de hele wereld weet op te bouwen. Al kent het succes ook een keerzijde en gaat dit alles niet altijd zonder tegenslagen...
