Een Parijzenaar krijgt te horen dat hij ernstig ziek is en hij vraagt zich af of hij snel zal sterven. Zijn nieuwe conditie geeft hem een volledig andere kijk op het leven en de mensen die zijn pad kruisen. Het leven wordt opeens duizendmaal intenser en alle mensen, van welke sekse, religie, ras, leeftijd of wat dan ook, zijn bijzonder voor hem. We zien vervolgens de levens van negen Parijzenaars die in grote of kleinere mate in zijn leefomgeving terecht komen en hoe hun levens, die op het eerste gezicht niet interessant zijn, voor henzelf toch zeer bijzonder zijn.
