'Kaboom' vertelt het verhaal van Smith, een biseksuele 18-jarige eerstejaarsstudent die stuit op een monsterlijk complot in een ogenschijnlijk idyllisch Zuid-Californisch kuststadje. Onder invloed van hallucinogene koekjes die hij at op een feestje, is Smith ervan overtuigd dat hij getuige was van de afschuwelijke moord op een raadselachtig roodharig meisje dat hem in zijn dromen achtervolgt. Wat hij ontdekt in zijn poging de waarheid te achterhalen leidt hem steeds dieper in een mysterie dat niet alleen de loop van z’n jonge leven maar ook het lot van de hele wereld zal veranderen...
