In 1928 is de jonge Clyde op het verkeerde moment op de verkeerde plek. Clyde raakt betrokken bij een schietpartij, waarbij twee mannen om het leven komen. Hij wordt opgepakt en ter dood veroordeeld. Enkele uren voor de executie beslist de gouverneur Clyde de doodstraf niet te geven. In plaats daarvan wordt hij naar een gevangenis in Texas gestuurd.
