De opportunist Tim heeft een verhouding met de vrouw van zijn handelspartner totdat hij de schatrijke weduwe Olivia Lawrence ontmoet. Ze wordt door haar stiefvader getiranniseerd en bij een heftige ruzie doodt Olivia hem. De politie is er van overtuigd dat ze uit noodweer handelde en Olivia trouwt met Tim. Ze raakt zo nog verder verstrikt in een moordcomplot.
