Een drievoudige moord heeft plaatsgevonden in een klein stadje in Mississippi, en onder de slachtoffers is de dochter van een congreslid. Reden genoeg voor de FBI om twee agenten te sturen om over de schouders van de lokale autoriteiten mee te kijken en, indien nodig, zelf onderzoek te doen. Ter plaatse stuit het duo op een muur van stilte en de lokale bevolking die zich uiterst onwillig gedraagt. Maar dat is niet het enige probleem dat de twee hebben: er is ook privé veel aan de hand.
