De film vertelt over een kerstdiner bij drie muzikale zusters in het Ierland van rond de eeuwwisseling. Onder de bezoekers bevinden zich de neef Gabriel Conroy en zijn vrouw Gretta. De avond zorgt er voor dat Gretta terugdenkt aan haar eerste liefde.
