Mitch McDeere is een net afgestudeerde en ambitieuze advocaat. Gedreven door hevige verlangens om zijn armoedige achtergrond achter zich te laten, gaat Mitch werken voor een klein, maar welvarend kantoor. Voor zijn diensten wordt Mitch meer dan rijkelijk beloond. Maar als de FBI hem confronteert met bewijzen van corruptie en moord binnen het kantoor, wordt Mitch door zijn onderzoek naar de waarheid heen en weer geslingerd tussen de FBI, de maffia en een kracht die er alles aan doet om zijn belangen te beschermen.
