In een afgelegen huis in een kleine badplaats wonen vier niet-verwante mannen en de vrouw die voor het huis en hun behoeften zorgt. Alle voormalige priesters zijn naar deze stille ballingschap gestuurd om de zonden uit hun verleden te zuiveren; de scheiding van hun gemeenschappen is de ergste vorm van bestraffing door de Kerk. Ze houden zich aan een strikt dagelijks schema, verstoken van alle verleiding en spontaniteit, en zijn elk moment een doelbewuste poging om boete te doen voor hun wandaden.
