De beginnende komiek Benjy Stone kan zijn geluk niet op als zijn jeugdheld, het roekeloze matinee-idool Alan Swann, wordt geboekt voor de variétéshow waarvoor hij schrijft. Maar wanneer Swann arriveert, slaagt hij er niet in zijn imago op het witte doek waar te maken. In plaats daarvan is hij een dronken rokkenjager die last heeft van plankenkoorts. Benjy krijgt de opdracht om voor de show voor hem te zorgen, en dat is alles wat hij kan doen om te voorkomen dat zijn voormalige idool volledig ontspoort.
