Ace Ventura (Carrey) is een dierendetective die wordt ingehuurd door Melissa Robinson (Cox) om de mascotte van een footballteam (een dolfijn) terug te vinden. Ondanks zijn onorthodoxe methodes komt Ace op het spoor van de dader, maar deze is niet wie hij lijkt te zijn.
