Anna is een verlegen meisje dat vanwege haar gezondheid naar haar oom en tante in een dorp aan de kust wordt gestuurd. Ze stelt zich niet open op tegenover anderen en blijft introvert. Anna ontmoet vervolgens een vreemd meisje genaamd Marnie. Ze worden vrienden, maar geen van de dorpsbewoners weet iets van Marnies bestaan af.
