Philip Marlowe bezoekt Engeland om een onderzoek te starten in de Britse upper class. In opdracht van een zieke oorlogsveteraan moet de detective een afperser opsporen, die de beide dochters van de ex-generaal belaagt. Marlowe kan bewijzen dat de reeds lang vermiste schoonzoon van de man werd vermoord.
