Het is 1945. De Tweede Wereldoorlog is een aantal weken voorbij en de éénarmige oorlogsveteraan John J. Macreedy arriveert per trein in het kleine dorp Black Rock. Macreedy is op zoek naar de Japanner Komoko, die een kleine ranch moet hebben in Adobe Flat, het berggebied in de buurt van Black Rock.
