Detective Dave Robicheaux onderzoekt de moord op een hoertje. Hij verdenkt maffiabaas Julie – Baby Feet – Balboni achter deze bloederige misdaad maar heeft nog geen bewijs. Als een filmploeg neerstrijkt in Lousiana ontdekt hij dat de nieuwe film geproduceerd wordt met de steun van maffiabaas Baby Feet. Hollywoodster Elrod Sykes vervult de hoofdrol in deze burgeroorlogsfilm. Als Elrod Sykes aangehouden wordt door detective Robicheaux voor het rijden onder invloed, begint deze loslippig te worden. Hij brabbelt over een lichaam dat hij heeft gevonden. Deze moord vond 35 jaar geleden plaats en detective Robicheaux kan zich dit nog goed herinneren.
