De inwoners van het stadje Hadleyville worden met bankroet geconfronteerd, wanneer de plaatselijke autofabriek, na 35 jaar, gesloten wordt. Alleen U-Haul Rental, de verhuurmaatschappij doet gouden zaken nu iedereen de stad verlaat. Hunt, de vroegere voorman van de fabriek, wil niet bij de pakken blijven zitten en heeft een plan. Hij reist naar Japan en onderhandelt met de firma Assan Motors, om het bedrijf over te nemen, en zo de stad opnieuw te laten floreren. Zijn plan werkt en Hunt wordt de held van de stad. Maar nog Hadleyville, noch Assan Motors, hebben de cultuurschok ingecalculeerd.
