Het verhaal is gebaseerd op een eeuwenoud Chinees gezegde, dat het leven opdeelt in vier emotionele hoekstenen: geluk, genot, verdriet en liefde. Het spreekwoord ziet deze emoties niet als geïsoleerd, maar tesamen vormen zij het menselijke wezen. Elk van de vier hoofdpersonen in dit verhaal is gebaseerd op één van deze emoties. En net als in het spreekwoord zijn ook hun wegen onlosmakelijk aan elkaar verbonden.
