Een snelheidsmaniak en zijn partner, een dikzak met een superheld als alter-ego, besluiten mee te doen aan een illegale cross-country-race, de Cannonball Run. Ze besluiten in een ambulance te rijden. Het deelnemersveld bestaat uit: Japanners in een super-auto inclusief radar en raketmotoren; twee gokkers verkleed als priester, etc. Een politicus c.q. autohater wil deze race opdoeken door de snelheidsduivels in te laten rekenen. De film kent een grote hoeveelheid 'sterren' en werd uitermate populair.
Nee, helaas is The Cannonball Run nog niet beschikbaar op Netflix in Nederland.
